Captain Jack Durrance is Harry's close friend who issues him a white feather for cowardice. During battle, Durrance is severely blinded by a rifle explosion. After Harry secretly rescues him, Durrance recuperates and begins dating Ethne. Upon learning of Harry's other heroic deeds, he realizes Ethne truly loves Harry, fakes a sight recovery to end their engagement, and departs for Germany to facilitate their reunion.
