Son of Afanasi. As a child, he steals to survive and meets revolutionary Rodion Klimentov. In 1917, he helps build an epic road, falls in love with Nastya Solomina, but loses her to Philip after a political quarrel. He is later beaten by the Solomins and cast adrift down the river.
