A prominent town citizen and grandfather of Edith. He pressures his son John to fulfill grand jury duty. Later, he unknowingly leads a campaign to parole Tom Evans, which results in Evans' murder. After receiving death threats from racketeer Joseph Britt, he hires a bodyguard but evades him to infiltrate the gang's hideout. He is captured but rescued by police, ultimately becoming a local hero.
