The patriarch and a former Confederate soldier who farms near Lake George, Florida. He shares a warm bond with his son Jody, leads hunting expeditions, and survives a rattlesnake bite using a doe's liver. He permits Jody to keep the orphaned fawn Flag but insists it be released later. After Flag destroys crops, Penny forces Jody to shoot the deer to end its suffering. He later reconciles with Jody after his return.
