The Baxter family's only surviving child and the story's protagonist. A pre-teen boy deeply attached to his father, he adopts an orphaned fawn named Flag. As Flag grows into a destructive nuisance, Jody faces the painful dilemma of keeping or releasing it. After being forced to shoot Flag, he runs away in despair, is rescued, and ultimately matures through the loss, reconciling with his parents.
